Cheap rental cars in New Zealand

Different people need different sorts of rental cars in different circumstances. We have a range of cars to meet all those needs. Want fair average quality for touring? Take one of our discount cars.

Just want cheap n' cheerful wheels? Take one of our "Backpacker Specials" - older cars that are mechanically fine, but carry a few more battle scars.

There are three seasons - high season from Dec 1 to Feb 28, shoulder season (Nov 1 to Nov 30, and Mar 1 to 31), and low season from Apr 1 to Oct 31. All rates include unlimited kms, basic insurance and GST (tax).

Discounts (everybody wants a discount!). Take a car for two weeks (14 to 20 days) and get a 10% discount on the weekly rate. Take it for three weeks (21 days) or more and get a 15% discount on the weekly rate. Take a car for two months (61 to 90 days) and get a 10% discount on the monthly rate. Take it for three months (91 days) or more and get a 15% discount on the monthly rate.

Early Purchasse Discounts. Book and pay in advance and get an extra discount as follows:

Diesel power: We operate several diesel powered vehicles. Diesel is very cheap - about two thirds the price of petrol. That is because there is no road tax on it at the pump. Instead we have to pay a tax for every km run. We pass that tax on to the hirers - they are getting cheap fuel, but they must also pay the tax of 3.5c per km. Even with the tax added, diesel is about 10% cheaper than petrol.

Airport delivery and drop-off is free provided the service is between 7.30am and 9pm. For out-of-hours delivery or drop-off a fee of $25 applies. For more details se our FAQ page.

For travel between the islands, you take our cars on the ferry (cost = $125 each way). The advantage of that arrangement is that you do not have to pack and unpack everything and carry it all on the ferry with you - you can relax and enjoy a wonderful sea-going sightseeing experience.

One way hires: We have an agent in Christchurch so you can, if you wish, travel one way between Auckland and Christchurch. There is a minimum one month hire on AKL/CHC one-ways. No minimum on CHC/AKL one-ways.

Older cars in the fleet. Mostly 91-94 models. Mitsubishi Mirage, Mazda Familia, Toyota Corolla etc.

If your hire crosses the boundary dates of these seasons you'll only be charged the daily rate applicable to the period concerned. Important: We charge on a 24 hour basis - not a calendar day basis like a lot of other companies. That can save you a whole day's hire charge. Please be aware of our late return penalties when vans are returned without authorisation after the agreed date.
